Light patterns translated into aluminum forms

Translating Dynamic Patterns in Nature. In the spring of 2006, as part of my master’s thesis
project at ITP, I created with the help of Milgo-Bufkin, a series of reliefs based on light
patterns reflecting off of a river I observed while walking in the woods of Bear Mountain.
My project was to select a site and explore it while observing the natural patterns and forces
which surrounded me, and translate them into physical and sonic forms, creating artifacts
of my experience. It is a way of developing an experiential, rather than computational
approach in algorithmic form generation, and giving form to ephemeral experiences. Below is a brief photo-documentation of my process. For a more detailed
description of the project, have a look at my thesis.
Process:
Still frames were taken from a video of light reflecting off of the river (Video)
Geometries were found by connecting the brightest points in each sequence. (Constellations)
Drawings were made of the different patterns and geometries, and steel bars shaped to
their configurations.

A large 200 ton press was used at Milgo-Bufkin in Brooklyn to form the large six foot sheets
of aluminum and smaller plates. The sheets were sandwiched between the steel bar forms
and pressed.

These are details of the smaller plates that were formed...I am in the process of translating
these and the larger forms into their sonic equivalent and making them at a much larger
scale...
